Aarhus University is situated in the heart of Aarhus. Students are taught in architecturally distinguished yellow-brick buildings surrounded by the beautiful University Park campus, which is also the setting for many social activities and concerts for students and city residents alike. Aarhus University is a leading European research university with education and research activities in all academic fields.
The first step in the history of Aarhus University was taken in hired premises on 11 September 1928, when “University Studies in Jutland” was inaugurated with 64 students enrolled. The combined staff consisted of one professor and four senior associate professors. In 2010, the entire Aarhus University had approximately 38,000 students and 11,000 members of staff.
The characteristic yellow brick buildings in the University Park have a total floor area of 246,000 m2 . Beyond this, the University has at its disposal a series of buildings outside of the park with a total floor area of 59,000 m2 .
With only minor modifications, the building style in the University Park has remained consistent since the architects Kay Fisker, C.F. Møller and Povl Stegmann won the architectural competition in 1931. Since 1939, the architectural firm C.F. Møller has been responsible for building activities. In a harmonious interplay with the rolling hills of the park, the uniform buildings create an attractive campus, which has achieved international renown.
Aarhus University is one of the most rapidly advancing institutions ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide. One reason for this progress is the inclusion of research talent development as a core activity in the university’s strategy. Currently, over half of Aarhus University's more than 42,000 students are enrolled at the postgraduate level. Moreover, Aarhus University is well on its way to doubling enrolments in its doctoral programmes, and the university maintains a consistent focus on the recruitment of talented international students and early career researchers.
